Chandelier from Charles Stanislas Matifat. Glass and gilded bronze. Reissue of Mathieu Lustrerie workshops. Around 1840, Charles Matifat began his apprenticeship with the goldsmith Antoine Vechte, only to succeeded his father as founder of the company. His first personal exhibition took place in 1849 during the Exhibition of Industrial Products. However, its international fame was truly established at the 1951 World's Fair, held at the Crystal Palace in London. During this occasion, Charles Stanislas Matifat presented this Louis XIV style chandelier, designed upon order of William III, King of Holland, to decorate his palace in The Hague. This piece attests to the international reputation of the bronze worker, and to the ingenuousity of their savoir-faire. This chandelier features a lion's head, a decorative element characteristic of the Louis XIV style, which perfectly embodies the majesty of the era. Charles Matifat's production is also visible around the grand staircase of the Charles Garnier Opera, which testifies to his lasting influence in the field of artistic creation and decoration.
