The Napoleon III style - also called Second Empire - is a composite and eclectic style thought out with a taste for luxury and pomp. It is inspired first by the Empire style, but also by the Italian Renaissance, which then comes to mix Inspirations Louis XIV, Louis XV or Louis XVI These interpretations are free, without concern for historical veracity. The Empress Eugenie particularly likes the Marie-Antoinette style, from which her interiors are inspired. Charles Garnier's Paris Opera represents the pinnacle of this style. It was also during this period that it took its true character: polychromy - black and gold for the lights - an abundance of embossed ornamentation, but also materials and techniques: blackened pear wood, mother-of-pearl marquetry , small pieces of furniture, knick-knacks, upholstered seats. Chandeliers also gain in opulence, by increasing the number of candles compared to their 18th century counterparts.
