Genoese chandelier with ten lights. Silver bronze and crystal. Reissue of Mathieu Lustrerie workshops. The art form of crystal bead lacing has its origins in the effervescent creativity of Milanese and Genoese chandeliers of the early 1550s. One of the most dazzling examples from this era is the Genoese flower chandelier. This typical 17th century creation from Genoa distinguishes itself using crystal beads meticulously sewn onto delicate bronze arms. This intricate technique creates a striking visual effect, like that of pearls of dew capturing and reflecting the first rays of light in the early morning. The smallest crystals, cut into beads, are skilfully sewn onto each arm of the chandelier. The Genoese crystal chandelier demonstrates the versatility of the pearl: if they emphasise and magnify the frame of the chandelier, the pearls can also become sculptures in themselves when they are sewn into “laces”. The fragility of the pearl is a constant reminder of the talent and attention to detail required by the polisher to create such works of art.
