Palm tree chandelier after Josef Hoffmann. Bronze and crystal. Mathieu Lustrerie reissue. The beginning of the 20th century was enlightened by an abundance of light and a fascination with electricity, as shown by the success of the Electricity Palace, still considered today as the highlight of the Universal Exhibition of 1900. The palm tree chandelier is marked by the disappearance of the candle and the arrival of the bulb, subtly hidden under the crystals. The end of the need for an arm to support the candle allows for innovation in form, a playful moment for all creators. The first existing model was created from a sketch scribbled on a napkin at the König von Ungarn Hotel in Vienna, Austria, by Joseph Hoffmann. Ludwig Bakalowits is part of the large family of Viennese crystal chandelier producers and came to commercialize Hoffmann's idea. He joined forces with the dean of the Vienna School of Applied Arts to jointly guide their productions in a four-handed partnership between artists and craftsmen. Hoffmann considered the chandelier to be an art object in its own right: a source of attraction and wonder. This chandelier produced in cast brass and crystal illustrates the emergence of a seamless collaboration between artisans and artists in a floral art nouveau style.
