Hot Air Balloon Chandelier. Crystal and gilded bronze. Antiquity. Mathieu Museum collection. Chandeliers can take are objects that can take on all kinds of sizes and shapes, offering an infinite palette of designs, ranging from the most banal to the most original.Certain designers, completely freed from conventions, embark on the design of ever more inventive models, sometimes amusing, or even downright extraordinary in the first sense of the term. For them, the quest for sustainability is not always the priority; what counts is the expression of their personal imagination, whether artisanal or artistic. Among these luminous creations, chandeliers in the shape of hot air balloons had their moment of glory at the beginning of the 19th century, shortly after the first spectacular flights of the Montgolfier brothers, who had already made an impression at the end of the 18th century. With this balloon, part of Régis Mathieu's personal collection, we discover a Charles an everyday object. This idea was taken up in a brilliant way by Kevin McCloud, who was inspired by an old model discovered in Italy. In this approach, the chandelier is not limited to being a simple element of interior decoration, it becomes a real object steeped in history, a luminous memorial which recalls the exploits of the pioneers of aviation and which continues to fascinate with its design unique and its deep meaning.
