A pair of torchère sconces in the style of Louis XIV, decorated with a lion's face which support the whole. The end of the 19th century saw the development of unprecedented reinter- pretations of past styles, combining tradition and modernity, specifically in matters of technique. This torchère, which references a model from the time of Louis XIV, develops its ornamentation with a delicate combina- tion of spirals and interlacing on cartouche matt background, highlighting, through sets of lights, the gilding of ornamental elements. The whole is held up by a delicate bronze ribbon, which is caught by a lion's mouth, typical during Louis XIV time. These lights, with work similar to that created by Bechard House; on Beranger Street in Paris, distributed through department stores starting at end of the 19th century, took place in embassies, palaces and luxury hotels. The development of this new taste has continued in many countries, especially in the United States.
